Release Notes

Differential values to visualize load profiles
With the new update, differential values can be displayed in the Digital Twin. The difference between the two most recently received values is calculated. In this way, we offer the possibility to calculate and visualise load profiles and to base rules on them. In this way, electricity consumption can be displayed simply and transparently.

Boolean Button
With the Boolean Button, we bring an optional button into the dashboard of the Digital Twin. Integrated into rules, alarms can be activated/deactivated, for example. It can also be used to send downlinks to devices with a click.

Customisable y-axis of Dashboard Line Charts
From now on, the scaling of the y-axis in line charts can be defined. This will make it easier to compare the values in different line charts.

Release Notes

Virtual Devices
The virtual devices are the heart of our agnostic device management. A greatly simplified sensor creation process and customizable monitoring based on freely configurable criteria now enable the rapid creation and management of larger quantities of devices.

Future oriented connectors concept
Our new connector concept allows to easily create new connectors for future technologies or third party applications depending on demand. The basic version already includes numerous connectors for e.g. Firefly, The Things Stack, MQTT or Webhook (http). Additionally, debugging is simplified by extensive logging in the connector. All this in a new dedicated user interface.

Integration flows
Use the generated data in other systems, tailoring it to existing interfaces, without implementation effort. Integration flows bring the data in exactly the desired format to every other corner of the existing IT landscape.

New menu structure
We have taken the agnostic device management as an opportunity to structure the menu more clearly. Thus, you will now find a grouping of the individual menu items into “Applications”, “Connectivity” and “Administration” to provide better context.

Visualise Boolean states

In many cases it is necessary to visualise Boolean values. Whether a door is open, whether a parking space is occupied or to check the operating status of systems. Boolean values are everywhere. With the new update, these values can also be displayed in the Digital Twin Dashboard. This makes it possible to present use cases even more clearly and intuitively.


User experience improvements

In addition, there are some minor improvements in this release that are aimed at the user experience. For example, accounts in the account management can now also be searched by Id, in order to find an account referenced in the Digital Twin more quickly. Another improvement was introduced in the map view of the Digital Twin. When navigating from the map view back to the overview of the Digital Twins, the Digital Twin that was selected before switching to the map view was no longer selected and any filter settings made were lost. Here, the user is now returns to the initial view with filter settings.

Public Digital Twin Dashboards

Sometimes business processes need to be shared with people outside your own organisation. With our new module, it is now possible to publicly share an individualised map view of the Digital Twin with data points. This creates full transparency and allows viewers to intuitively grasp business processes.

Contextual information in Influx queries

For the creation of some dashboards in Grafana it is helpful to have the twin title and the hierarchy of digital twins. Context information is now available for the data in the database, which is available in Grafana, but also in other Influx queries.

  • Usability Improvements/ Extended search results list

    When searching for an account, you currently only see the parent and have to click through to your search result. The same challenge existed for a long time in the search for Digital Twins, but we already solved it with the last release. Now we have also revised the search for accounts and these results will also be displayed directly in future. That way, it is much more convenient for you when filtering lists by different (sub-)accounts).

  • External payload parser

    Currently, all parsers are set up directly in niotix. With the next release it will also be possible to integrate an external parser simply via URL. That way you can use your self-written parsers (e.g. for location solving) for parsing incoming raw-data.

  • OAuth2

    For an easier access management, niotix will have an OAuth2 Integration. In the future, the user will be able to authenticate him-/herself to the system in two different ways. The first way is the classic way with user and password. The second way is to use the subsequent automatic authentication via an external provider by any OAuth2 Server. Google OAuth will be integrated by default. OAuth2 is another step to support rollouts in larger organizations: It reduces the maintenance efforts for IoT-responsibles for updating accounts and gives your users more convenience when using niotix.

  • Permissions Scope Improvement

    In the past, loading the list of users took a lot of time and in some cases might even bring up an error messages. In fact, the error message was not an error - but due to our rapidly growing amount of customers on our SaaS system, niotix couldn’t response in time. We improved our backend-performance massivly to give you more performance even with a larger amount of users in the system.

    We have used the time since the last release for some general improvements of niotix.

    Here is one example:
    To make navigation in niotix easier, the visited pages and lists will be saved in the browser. This allows you to easily return to your last opened list or you can return to a visited page by simply navigating with the browser’s “back” or “forward” buttons.

  • Extend Search via api to search by custom properties

  • Optimization of the filtering of Digital Twins:

Release Notes

  • Extension of the 2-Factor-Authentication:
    In December, we introduced the optional 2-Factor-Authentication. With this release, we added the possibility for users to generate recovery codes. With recovery codes, users have the possibility for a one-time log-in in cases they lost e.g. their smartphone - without involving the system administrator. Recovery codes are automatically generated as soon as a user activates the 2-factor-authentication.

  • Additional meta data in rules:
    Besides the title, ID and data states, you can now access the hierarchy as well as customer key-value-pairs within a digital twin’s rule. This allow you e.g. to trigger a rule and submit additional information to a 3rd party system, so that the 3rd party system can automatically proceed the data.

  • Copy states:
    When you create/ edit the configuration of a digital twin’s state, you can now copy and insert the properties with two clicks. This will help you to create many similar states among different digital twins in an ease of time.

  • System improvements:
    Since the large December release, we have used the time to improve many smaller things and fix issues within the system. Besides, we also deepened the manual. In addition, we will this month introduce a more detailed change log in the manual to give more transparency of smaller changes in each release.

2.2.5 December 2021 Update

  • Preview of 2022: New device management

    At the end of this year we would like to give you a small foretaste of the upcoming year with the beta version of our future device management! In the new menu item “Virtual Devices” you will get an insight into the beta version of our device management, which will simplify the data processing of various IoT data sources and unify the user interface of the digital twin and the device management.

    These are some of the benefits you can look forward to with Virtual Devices:

    • Virtual Devices are completely generic and can represent any type of IoT devices, so we can more easily integrate other technologies besides LoRaWAN devices in the future
    • The already existing, detailed and granular authorization system of the Digital Twins in the system will from now on also be applied to Virtual Devices
    • Rules and notifications can be created directly based on devices
    • Connectors can now be linked to devices in addition to Digital Twins and replace Consumer and Originator in the long run
    • A new powerful device monitoring has been designed according to your feedback, which defines the device status based on individualized conditions and notifies in case of critical states

    The Virtual Devices in the beta version are currently usable with the new TTI connector, further connectors will follow in the next updates. We will of course catch you up on the topic at the beginning of next year and offer webinars in which you will receive information about the changes as well as an introduction to the Virtual Devices.

  • Authorization enhancements: System users with read permission can now also view external applications such as dashboards in Grafana with their previous permissions. In addition you can now find all external systems gathered below the menu item “Connected systems”.

  • Expansion of time-aggregated states: By using the new operation “Difference to last period” (in addition to the previous selection options) when creating a time-aggregated twin state, the consumption in the configured period can for example be automatically calculated and visualized from absolute meter values. Furthermore it is possible for you to set the length of the calendar period (minute, day, month, year) as well as to select further options of the aggregation period (e.g. previous week, previous month, etc.).

  • System-wide CSV export: The download of CSV files is now additionally available for the data states of the Digital Twin as well as the Virtual Devices and is executed as a background action. This gives you the possibility to download a large amount of data in a very short time independent of your internet browser.

  • Upgraded line charts: Line charts in dashboards and the state history of twin states are displayed more accurately with further display options (maximum, minimum, average).

  • Optional two-factor authentication: To increase the security of your account data another factor will be required during the login process in addition to the password entry. The authentication procedure uses a QR code that generates a new 6-digit code every 30 seconds.

  • Frequency adjustments: In firefly and niotix the frequencies for China and South Korea are available soon.

2.2.4 November 2021 Update

  • Automatic creation of data sources for data state visualization in Grafana: With just one click in the module settings it is possible to automatically create the Influx database data source and the API key. Besides the previous manual way, you can easily visualize the data state history of the digital twin in Grafana.

  • Custom properties in Digital Twin: You can now store custom information in Digital Twin in any number of text fields such as serial numbers, model, access codes, etc.

  • New branding for niotix: n the last newsletter we told you about the new Digimondo logo and new corporate colors. From now on you will find these colors and fonts additionally as basic settings in the SaaS system.

  • **Select LoRaWAN frequency for devices: **As in firefly, you can now select the LoRaWAN frequency in niotix when creating a device for the international use of our IoT software.

2.2.3 October 2021 Update

  • **Use Twin Data States in IoT Dashboard Builder: **You can now include data states from Digital Twins, in addition to device data, in the IoT Dashboard Builder (Grafana) to visualize and analyze them in dashboards or process the data states with Grafana tools. Via a database newly introduced in the background for this purpose, you can use XAPI to submit your own database queries for the data points to be even more flexible in data analysis and processing. The database conversion also shortens the loading times for the line charts in the dashboard.
  • Versand von Downlinks an Actility-Geräte: Auf der Geräte-Seite könnt ihr ab jetzt Downlinks direkt an Geräte von Actility senden. Außerdem könnt ihr Actility-Geräte mittels des neuen Connectors auch aus einem Digitalen Zwilling heraus über Regeln ansprechen.

2.2.2 September 2021 Update

  • Linking data states with geo-coordinates of a twin (Combined IoT Hub data states): With this feature, you can now conveniently display the history of recorded GPS data in the map view.
  • Use twin data states in Grafana: You can include data states from digital twins in Grafana to visualize and analyze them in dashboards.
  • WebHook consumer signatures in firefly: You can add a signature to maintain data integrity and ensure that messages sent via WebHook Consumer are unaltered. This ensures the origin and integrity of messages sent from niotix.

2.2.1 August 2021 Update

  • Aggregate data states with historical data: You can combine already created data states with historical data within Digital Twins to infer totals, maximum, minimum and average values for a defined time period.

2.2.0 July 2021 Update

  • Gateway Management: This new feature in our IoT Data Hub allows you to monitor the operation of LoRaWAN gateways. Via a list or map view, gateway management provides insight into each gateway’s status and transmitted packets. It is also possible to receive notifications about critical gateways via email.

  • New Asset Management Module: niotix now offers a dedicated module to virtually track the location of goods and items (assets). In a map or a tabular overview, you can now track where and in which zones an asset is located. This works both outside and inside buildings - and you can combine it with location-based rules! This allows you to implement use cases for location tracking and tracing. You’ll get exclusive demo access first.

  • High-performance CSV export: The download of CSV files is executed as a background action in the menu items “Devices” and “Applications” so that you can download a large number of data in a short time independently of your Internet browser. This feature will be extended to the other menu items in the course of the following updates.

  • Retention Policy for Database: System administrators can individually set the retention periods of Digital Twin data points for sub-accounts. The default value, which our SaaS system also uses, is 24 months.

2.1.2 Juni 2021 Update

  • Overlay assistant for embedding floor plans in map view: You can easily embed floor plans and plans of a building in the map view of a Digital Twin with the help of an assistant program. This allows you to visualize relevant buildings from the inside as well, e.g. to identify the exact position of a sensor.

  • List view for Digital Twins: On the overview page of Digital Twins, you can switch from the familiar tree structure to a simple list view for overview purposes with one click.

  • XAPI extension for Digital Twins: Especially in larger rollouts, configuring Digital Twins manually is tedious. Therefore, our XAPI also supports the creation of data points and rules, allowing the process to be automated.

  • Integrating standard downlinks: You can configure standard downlinks now in the device types. With this, simple downlink messages can be sent to the devices from the devices in niotix.

  • Frequency adjustments in firefly: In firefly, the frequencies for Brazil and Australia are available soon.

2.1.1 May 2021 Update

  • New geolocation features:

    • Location-based rules: In addition to the existing event and time-based rules for automating processes, starting May 26 you will be able to use the locations of Digital Twins as additional triggers for a rule: For example, when a Digital Twin moves out of or into a defined area, an action is triggered.

    • Icons for time and location-based rules: In the rules overview in each twin, corresponding icons appear next to rules based on time or geolocation for easy reference.

    • Geo-History: This new feature visualizes the different locations and movement of a Digital Twin in a specific time period and area.

    • Automatically created polygons: In the map view, a polygon is automatically created around each map icon of a digital twin, which moves with it and whose radius can be freely defined. This also allows the status of moving digital twins to be visualized in color on the map.

  • Optimizations for the dashboard view:

    • Optimized visualization of the gauge: The various threshold values are displayed in the gauge visualization in the dashboard of a digital twin.

    • New dashboard visualization line graph: The historical data of a data point is displayed in a graph.

  • New connectors
    • Microsoft Exchange Server: The mail connector now supports logging in to mail servers without credentials, as is often the case with OnPremis installations in use with a Microsoft Exchange Server, for example.
    • MQTT with self-signed certificates: Via a checkbox in the settings for the MQTT connector, you can now set to accept self-signed certificates. In this way, the data exchanged with the MQTT broker can be transmitted in encrypted form.

    • Time-based rules: In addition to the existing event-based rules for automating processes, as of April 28, you will be able to use a specific time or interval as an additional trigger for a rule.
    • Duplicate rules: With the “Copy” button, you can copy rules from one Digital Twin to one or more Twins in the same account.

    • Bulk synchronization of digital twins: You can synchronize a Digital Twin with one or more twins in a few steps. Information such as visualizations and data points of one twin is thus easily overwritten to other twins and all synchronized uniformly.
  • New Feedback Button: Use the question mark button in the top-right menu to access a new menu where you can enter feedback and reports directly. You can send us positive and negative feedback and suggestions for innovations in the system directly via a contact form and add attachments.
  • Filter digital twins by favorites: Above the Digital Twins listing, you can filter by the twins you have marked as favorites by clicking on the “star” icon.

2.0.3 March 2021 Update

  • Optimizations in the User Interface:

    • Digital twins and devices can be opened in a new tab with a right-click.

    • In the tree hierarchy of Digital Twins, the ID is displayed next to the title.

    • In the detailed view of a Digital Twin, you can easily switch to other twins in the tree hierarchy, where the current twin is located, by clicking one button.

  • New CSV Importer: The CSV importer supports the itron module Cyble 5 as well as individual fields. This is especially helpful when handling large amounts of IoT data.
  • Connector for Kafka: Updates of data points can be forwarded to Kafka clusters.
  • Connector for Webhooks: Through the connector, rules can be built with Webhook, and thus actions can be triggered.
  • Individual page settings possible without domain: Even in accounts without a domain, it is now possible to insert your own logo and background image.
  • firefly connector with MultiCast downlink: With the new feature for the firefly connector, a packet can be sent to a multicast group as an action in the rule editor of a digital twin, e.g. for a control command for street lighting. For more information about the multicast feature of firefly, see the firefly manual in section 4.5.

  • Selecting a custom highlight color with color picker: Under the menu “Settings” in the “System” submenu, you can - as account-administrator with a domain configured in your account - define a custom color when choosing the accent color You can select the color using a color picker.
  • Digital Twins or data states used in aggregated data states cannot be deleted: To avoid inconsistencies after manually deleting digital twins and states, Digital Twins or data states used in an aggregated data state cannot be deleted. If you try to delete a Digital Twin or a data state used in an aggregated data state, a pop-up window appears informing that removal is only possible if the aggregated data state is deleted.
  • Neue Filter-Funktion für Benutzer in Unter-Konten und Administratoren in übergeordneten Konten: Für eine bessere Übersicht in der Benutzerliste unter dem Menüpunkt “Einstellungen” im Unterpunkt “Konten” können Administratoren mit zwei Felder über der Liste nach bestimmten Gruppen filtern: “Admins von übergeordneten Konten anzeigen” und “Benutzer aus Unterkonten anzeigen”.
  • New filter function for users overview: For a better overview in the user list under the menu “Settings” in the sub-item “Accounts”, administrators can filter for specific groups with two fields above the list: “Show admins from parent accounts” and “Show users from sub-accounts”.
  • Show IDs for accounts and digital twins: For advanced niotix-users, the ID of the corresponding object is now shown beside the name of the account and the digital twin, so that you can ensure to edit the right object.
  • Updates and optimizations of various features: Thanks to the numerous feedback from our customers since the update to niotix, we have already been able to optimize many functions.

  • Implementation of MQTT bridges for Digital Twin-State Updates: MQTT is one of the standard protocols in IoT e.g. in plant control. niotix offers experienced users a more flexible handling of MQTT. In our new software, the MQTT bridge is extended to a flexible tool to import different data - whether IoT or other information - into the Twin. Updates of a state can be output from a Digital Twin via MQTT, e.g. to be processed in other applications.
  • User API with permission system: In the last release we showed you how to create your own API keys to allow third party systems access to Digital Twins. Compared to niota 1.0 this option has now been extended: For each API-key its permission can be defined in a fine granular way, similar to user accounts. In addition, niotix now has its own API to interact with the Digital Twin automatically.
